Key Issues
Thriving Downtown
City sales tax receipts are lower than forecasted. These changes are driven by a decline in retail spending with uncertainty at the federal level. As part of my campaign, I am reaching out to local business and supporting organizations to hear directly from them what they most need from city government to thrive.
Compassionate Policing
Improving trust between police and the people they serve, compassionate policing emphasizes community engagement, de-escalation, and mental health support over military tactics and gear. Federal public safety grants supporting this work, including mental health resources for officers and assistive services for crime victims are being canceled, while distribution of military-grade assets to law enforcement are being expanded. Darleen will promote law enforcement budget transparency, ensuring that public safety funds are allocated to community services over military gear.
Affordable Housing
Affordable Housing: The 2024 Thurston County point in time homeless census found 952 people experiencing homelessness, with 334 living in vehicles or encampments not meant for human habitation. Also, many working families experience housing insecurity, essentially a paycheck away from losing their homes. Darleen advocates for housing first, rapid rehousing, and support for families to remain housed.
Sustained Support for the Arts
The Arts enhance our community and economy. Recent reductions in federal funding for the arts significantly impact local artists, organizations, and community partners. Darleen advocates for continued support of Olympia’s vibrant art and music scene as a setting for active community engagement.
